The Books
"The books" is the most successfully mystified phrase in small business. Here's the whole thing: money in, money out, what's left. A spreadsheet, fifteen minutes a month. You do not need software with a monthly fee to know whether you made money.

Notice something: every line was installed on an earlier rung. The reality-check bill from Rung 1, the fee math from Rung 5 — the ladder wasn't teaching you setup, it was teaching you your own P&L in advance.
The monthly fifteen minutes
Pick a day — the 1st works. Open Stripe, read the month's total, write it down. List what you spent, from your bank statement. Subtract. Done. The first month takes thirty minutes because it's new; by month three it's ten. This tiny ritual is the difference between "I think it's going okay?" and knowing.
Why this changes decisions
The moment the numbers are visible, questions answer themselves. Is the $7 email worth it? Is that $60 of materials creeping up? Can you afford to drop $100 on flyers — and what would they have to produce to pay for themselves? People without a P&L answer these with mood. You'll answer with arithmetic.
